Yesterday, Turkish fishing schooner “Chanak Chalyk” was detained by marine guard ship “Mykolaiv”. The schooner was detained in 50 miles from cape Tarkhankut. 7 crew members, all citizens of Turkey, were on the board. Border guards detected wooden fish storage containers, 141 containers for nets and 1.5 tons of ice on the board.

This detention occurred in severe weather conditions. In the course of detention, the schooner did not react to the requests in Russian, English or Turkish languages. When the border guard ship approached, the schooner began moving in the direction of Turkey; it stopped only after an announcement of possible opening the warning fire. The schooner had no vessel flag, and a number of fishing nets were found on the board. The captain could not produce any vessel documents, as there were none onboard. He claimed those were weather conditions and break-down of GPS equipment that caused the schooner’s staying at exclusive (maritime) economic zone of Ukraine.

According to preliminary information, this schooner has been previously detained by border guards of Romania two years ago. The General Consul of the Turkish Republic in Ukraine and representatives of cooperating bodies in Sevastopol were informed about the fact of detection. The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine is preparing necessary documents for reimbursement of losses, relating to detention of the violator. Moreover, as the schooner violated legislation in the Black Sea region before, maximum efforts will be applied by the Ukrainian border guard agency for it’s confiscation as a mean of illegal activity.
