The Chornobyl zone's popularity for extreme stalkers is increasing

Last year border guards of the Zhytomyr detachment, whose duty is to protect the state border in the area of responsibility, provided reliable security of the state border running along the exclusion zone boundary.

Despite the fact that the territory, which was contaminated with radioactivity as a result of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster, remains dangerous and has been an area, where a person can get a significant dose of radiation, a great number of travelers headed here in 2019. Along with the official tourists, the so-called "stalkers" ‑ lovers of extreme tourism and recreation, tried to sneak into the abandoned territory illegally bypassing the established control points.

Last year border guards of the Zhytomyr detachment, whose duty is to protect the state border in the area of responsibility, provided reliable security of the state border running along the exclusion zone boundary.

In 2019 border guards, along with National Police officers identified 186 citizens who attempted to enter the exclusion zone and the area of compulsory eviction illegally for various purposes. The vast majority of detainees are stalkers. Compared to 2018, the number of fans of illegal extreme tourism has increased slightly.

Compared to previous years, the forbidden territory began to attract foreign stalkers. In addition to 133 Ukrainians, law-enforcement officers detained and brought to responsibility 9 citizens of Belarus, 7 citizens of the Russian Federation, 21 citizens from the EU countries, namely Lithuania, Poland, Romania, France, the Czech Republic and Sweden, 4 Kazakhstan’s natives and 3 citizens of the United States of America.

Border guards continue to carry out their duties to ensure the inviolability of the state border in the area contaminated with radioactivity.
