Two Romanian citizens lost their Volkswagen after attempting to smuggle cigarettes across Ukrainian-Romanian border

On April 10th, during a vehicle inspection at the Porubne international border crossing point border guards together with customs officers discovered specially equipped hidden compartments in the vehicles. Using the structural features of the vehicles, the driver, a 52-year-old citizen of Romania, managed to hide 430 packs of cigarettes without Ukrainian excise stamps in the cavity of the car body under the rear seats. Another 24-year-old citizen of a neighboring country concealed 120 packs of tobacco under the double bottom of the fuel tank.

The preliminary evaluation of the seized cigarettes is about 36,000 UAH. In addition, 2001 and 1993 Volkswagen vehicles were confiscated for the illegal transportation of tobacco. The seized vehicles were estimated at 150,000 and 88,000 UAH respectively.
