As part of the international technical assistance project, the equipment of radioactive and nuclear detection, dosimetry and decontamination was transferred by the Norwegian Government in Lysychansk yesterday.

During the event, the Head of Mission of the Norwegian Embassy in Ukraine, Frederick Arthur, noted that an important purpose of this project was to strengthen the capacity of the border agency to combat illicit transferring of ionizing radiation sources and nuclear smuggling. He emphasized that the Government would provide assistance to all areas where needed.

In total, the project provided dosimeters, spectrometers, information boards and decontamination systems worth more than UAH 1.5 million.

All received special equipment will be used by border guards at entry-exit check points while checking people and cargoes with the purpose of detecting forbidden items and substances which can be moved through the line of demarcation.

In particular, there could be special nuclear materials, radioactive substances of different nature and other items of sources of ionizing radiation. In case of the use of weapons of mass destruction it is possible to reduce the degree of contamination of personnel and equipment with radioactive substances due to this equipment.
