In Orshanets, the anti-proliferation Training Centre for weapons of mass destruction continues to improve the detection system for nuclear and radioactive materials outside regulatory control.

The activities continue as part of the International Technical Assistance Program "Detection and Suppression of Nuclear Smuggling" with the support of the US Department of Energy.

Recently, a three-day training course on detecting and checking acceptable levels of ionizing radiation has been held. Deputy chiefs of staff – heads of border control organization departments - took part in the training.

During the training, participants considered and discussed pressing issues related to the organization of detection of hazardous substances and the selection of personnel who directly carry out measures to record the facts of exceeding the permissible levels of ionizing radiation at border crossing points. The officers also got acquainted with the main technical means of detecting and measuring sources of ionizing radiation.

It is safe to say that training of State Border Guarding Bodies personnel on the detection of hazardous substances and objects contains the experience gained by the teaching staff thanks to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the US Ministries of Energy and Defense, the Export Control and Border Security Program of the US Embassy in Ukraine, the OSCE Project Coordinator in Ukraine and other international partners.
