Reliable protection of the state border is also provided on the territory that was exposed to radioactive contamination as a result of the Chernobyl accident.

The inviolability of the border passing through the exclusion zone and the zone of unconditional (compulsory) resettlement with a total length of more than 162 km, as well as protection of almost 143 km of the rear border of the Chernobyl zone is provided by Zhytomyr Border Guard Detachment.

Border guards also use Cougar and Kozak 2 armored vehicles to perform tasks in the resettled area.

Border guards do not forget to carry out radiation and chemical reconnaissance during their service, using the latest equipment provided as part of international technical assistance for the detection of nuclear materials and radioactive substances.

It should be mentioned that each border guard detail has radiation monitoring devices, which are a mandatory part of the border guards’ equipment during their service in the contaminated area.

It should be also noted that the border guards of Zhytomyr Border Guard Detachment in close cooperation with the National Police during performing their tasks of protection of the Chornobyl zone detected almost 100 illegal “tourists” who entered the exclusion zone for extreme tourism in 2020. In addition, almost 200 kg of ungulates, about 100 kg of scrap metal and more than 500 kg of wild plants were prevented from moving from the radioactively contaminated area.
