The border guards` dogs do a lot of work. They also help to detect weapons, ammunition and smuggled tobacco.

Dogs also significantly reduce the desire of aggressive offenders to resist for border guards. This is a guarantee of security during the convoy and protection of detainees.

During 11 months of 2020, border guards with the help of service dogs detained more than 400 offenders, found 164 weapons, 6.6 thousand ammunition, more than 40 thousand drug pills, more than 100 kg of drugs and almost 1.3 million packs of cigarettes. Thanks to four-legged assistants, there was smuggled goods worth over 5.6 million hryvnias were exposed.

Today, more than 1,000 dogs of 16 breeds serve in the border department. Some of them are involved in the service in the area of environmental protection. Instructors with dogs are trained at the Canine Training Centre of the State Border Guard Service in Velyki Mosty, Lviv Region.

Most dogs are trained to search for weapons, explosives and drugs. On average, 45% of border arrests are carried out with the help of four-legged helpers. And despite the advanced technology, no one can detect drugs or explosives better than dogs.
