In the near future, the State Border Guard Service will begin work on the purchase of equipment that will enable to detect drones and intercept control over them.

“In recent years, the number of unmanned aerial vehicles used for illegal activities has been increasing,” Serhii Voronyi, head of the Department of the organization of the border service said. He noted that the drones are mostly used by violators to smuggle cigarettes, but it is possible that drones could be used for other illegal purposes. In this regard, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine initiated a number of amendments to regulations, which were supported by higher authorities.

In particular, amendments to the Law of Ukraine “On the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine” on improving the use and enforcement of coercive measures, military equipment and weapons by border guards have recently entered into force. And in August this year, certain amendments were made to the Government Resolution "On the Border Regime". In particular, the amendments to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine obliged the owners or operators of aircraft to inform the border unit about the planned flight in the border controlled area.

Amendments to the Law of Ukraine "On the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine" allowed border guards to use weapons and special means against drones of violators.

“The servicemen of the State Border Guard Service have the right to use firearms in order to damage or destroy aircraft flying within the border strip, over or near our boats, ships, support vessels, protected objects, including checkpoints and EECPs, places of deployment of border patrols, if such flights are carried out in violation of established rules. Also, I want to emphasize that in this case the weapon is used without warning,” Serhiy Voronyi commented.

Colonel Voronyi noted that the specialists of the State Border Guard Service studied the experience of the EU, the USA and Israel in the use of means to intercept control and forcibly land unmanned aerial vehicles. Now Ukrainian border guards have also received the legal right to use such means.
