This year the team of the Border Guard Academy “Terra Nostra” took part in the All-Ukrainian gender competition for the first time.

The competition among universities of the security and defence sector of Ukraine was held within the project “Through equality and understanding to defence and security”.  The purpose of this event is to ensure the principles of gender equality among cadets and the scientific and pedagogical staff of higher educational institutions with specific learning conditions.

24 participating teams took part in the competition.  The Bohdan Khmelnytskyi National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine was represented by five cadets of the Faculty of Operational and Service Support: Yan Chudinov (team captain), Halyna Zozulia, Bohdan Zinchenko, Diana Chudinova and Svitlana Stepanenko.

As part of the competition, the teams presented a thematic video, which was evaluated by the number of likes on Youtube. Another stage of the competition was the presentation by the captains of the teams of their vision of ensuring gender equality in the universities of the security and defence sector of Ukraine.  The teams also passed a thematic online test, in which the winners were determined by the number and speed of providing the correct answers.

The work of the teams was evaluated by a jury headed by the Government Commissioner for Gender Policy, Deputy Chair of the Commission on Gender Equality of the Council of Europe, Kateryna Levchenko.

As a result of the competition, the team of the National Academy took second place.  The jury also noted the innovative approach in the presentation of the debuting team “Terra Nostra”.

During the competition, the cadets gained new knowledge on gender equality in the military environment, which is necessary for border officers in the implementation of management.

Today, the National Academy of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine integrates the gender component, taking into account the requirements of the United Nations Resolution “Women.  Peace.  Security”.  The Academy is one of 10 pilot higher educational institutions in the security and defence sector of Ukraine, where gender issues are actively introduced in the educational process.  The university provides equal rights and opportunities for all categories of staff.  Women servicemen appointed to leadership positions take an active part in making important decisions regarding the life of the National Academy. Gender stereotypes of entrants, cadets and their parents are also changing. So, this academic year, for the first time in the history of the university, 11 girls entered the Faculty of the State Border Security, which was previously perceived as purely male.
