Did you know that paratroopers appeared in the Border Guard Troops in the 1990s?

Exactly 20 years ago, on October 17, 2000, the Presidential Decree “On the Military Unit No. 1478 of the Border Guard Troops of Ukraine” was signed. According to this document, the 23rd airmobile Border Guard Detachment of special purpose of the Border Guard Troops of Ukraine was transferred to the Security Service of Ukraine. But before that, the Border Guard special forces managed to work on all sections of the state border of Ukraine. The paratroopers in green berets were especially effective on the border with Russia, Belarus, and Moldova. After the collapse of the USSR, there were not enough such units and necessary infrastructure.

Paratroopers in the Border Guard Troops appeared in 1995. The Ministry of Defence handed over to the State Border Committee of Ukraine one of the best airmobile brigades stationed in the city of Kremenchuk (Poltava region). The brigade was reformed into the 23rd separate airmobile border detachment of special purpose. It was used as a reserve by the Commander of the Border Guard Troops of Ukraine.

The use of airmobile units in border protection was one of the steps towards creation of border guard special forces. Also, in the 90's as part of some border guard detachments were formed reserve outposts, later - border guard outposts for special tasks (BGOST). During the implementation of the Concept of Development of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine for the period up to 2015, the concept of “mobile forces” was introduced. They included mobile border outposts of border guard detachments, separate mobile border outposts of regional offices and a mobile border guard detachment.

Nowadays, servicemen of mobile units of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine work on a par with colleagues from the most effective law enforcement agencies in the world. They demonstrate their skills both at the border and at special forces competitions, where, among other things, they successfully compete with NATO special forces.

DOZOR Detachment and other special units of the State Border Guard Service successfully operate on land, on water and even under water. Now the border guard special forces are very different from their counterparts who served in the airmobile border detachment two decades ago. Special officers of the State Border Guard Service are more focused on performing law enforcement functions. Today they are not so “aero”, but surprisingly mobile. If the current border guards have to act from the air, they will most likely use parachuteless landing instead of parachutes.

You can see how the soldiers of the 23rd Airmobile Border Guard Detachment of special purpose were used and trained in the video clip from the TV program “Border”. The program is from 1997, so the format and quality are appropriate.
