A truck with illegally felled Christmas trees was recently detained in the border sector of Hirsk Border Guard Division of the Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment.

In the evening, a joint border patrol with the National Police stopped a Renault car a few kilometres from the border to check the legality of its stay within the controlled border area. A resident of the border was driving a truck with Ukrainian registration. Blue and yellow flags adorned the windshield of the vehicle's cab, and stripes of Russian tricolor could be seen on the door.

The driver of the truck informed the police that he was transporting timber products, but was unable to provide any permits for inspection. During the vehicle search it was found that the closed trailer was completely filled with pines. In total, there were 800 young conifers without the necessary markings.

Pine trees were confiscated by the National Police. The amount of damage caused to the state will be determined by experts. Measures are underway to clarify all the circumstances of the case. The competent authorities shall decide on the commencement of criminal proceedings under Art. 246 “Illegal felling or illegal transportation, storage, sale of wood” of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

It is worth noting that illegal transactions with Christmas trees this year were recorded quite early - a week before the beginning of the calendar winter.
